a chat outside June 28, 2012

I catch them chatting on the sidewalk

outside our office, but they clam up

as I approach, like two school kids

with a secret, though neither one grins

as a kid might have,

why or wherefore remains a mystery,

when the boss, an owner,

needs to no excuse to talk

to one of his ace employees,

 and yet, they look guilty,

while I feel guilty and jealous

and suspect more is going on

than her just asking him for a raise.

We live in a world of personal intrigue

and desperate need for advancement,

and yet, I wonder what it is she is advancing,

and why he has that sick puppy look

 whenever he gets near her,

waiting for a pat on his head

their roles seemingly reversed

so it is impossible to tell

who really is in charge.

She looks less guilty than he does,

 maybe a bit annoyed,

since I have intruded on them again.
