since she told me the same thing
for the most part until she saw I didn’t care,
the way he does –
true except that in his version
her father died when she was eight,
in mine he simply left and remains
alive and well somewhere in New York State,
where she goes from time to time
to visit and to work as bartender for his parties,
the tale of a man who refused
to follow in the family footsteps
into organized crime,
a tale crafted in much the same way
as his book is,
where she likely picked up clues
to what most attracts him,
mafia dons and girls who need protection,
she hinting at her thinking when she claimed
“he’s really fucked up when it comes to women,”
and because he seems
head over heals in love with her,
he looks past the obvious facts
to believe her every word,
pledging protection she most likely doesn’t need,
hooked on it because he needs
to believe she is what she says she is.
