The car is in the shop again
there are more than at home these days
this time for
multiple reasons
it seems things coming patches and then in this case, a
headlight first then the engine light, neither of which left untreated would
allow me to pass inspection do this last November
the front light went
out in the week cleaning up the Thanksgiving and so made it impossible to get
an appointment and I took the trip to Asbury with one headlight hoping to get
there and back during daylight.
we might have
succeeded had we not stopped at the Wick for dinner on the way back
the car, a 2012 model
I purchased late in 2011, has less than 60,000 miles on it, partly because I
moved near a light rail station in 2016 and left it parked in our driveway for
most of the week, using it to get groceries, do laundry or our Friday magical
mystery tour to remote parts of the state
despite the recent trips to repair shop, the car has not yet
reached the tipping point after which I will need to replace it and when I do
it won't be a new car since I'm uncertain if I can get a loan at my age
The car seems to reflect my own mortality since I could not
drive it for the first few months I owned it due to recovery from eye surgery
I wore an eye patch for several months until I could recover
and then finally got to drive the car around
I will not likely have to worry about that in the future. my
eyes seem to be fine. several surgeries one for retina reattachment two replacing
of the lenses on my eyes. now my other body parts are struggling although 2022
to was the pivotal year which I had double hernia and a enlarged prostate which
explains some of the other dysfunction they had at the time
The car of course reflects a bit of the turmoil of 2012 when
I had to deal with the poet and it becomes a symbol in some ways of my survival
and my aging, things that she appears to be contemplating herself these days in
her effort to embrace middle age
At the end of the day of course I'll get the car back and
then still take trains where I have to except in those remote parts of the
county I can't reach by public transportation
Anyway, we're coming close to Christmas and repairing the
car also will allow me to see my daughter again, just before the holiday which
I was worried I might not be able to do
Let's hope the rain doesn't turn to snow which would make
the trip perilous with or without two headlights
