As I think back on it it
I realize that
When it is
Too good to be true,
It IS too good to be true,
When she called
To tell me that,
How much she is
Into me,
When I knew
Even then
It wasn’t true.
All too aware of my age
And hers
And I think
She must be crazy.
Or that she must
Have mistaken me
For some body else,
Too good to be true,
And yet,
How in the years since
I wish to hear her voice
In the dead of night
Telling me this
Bitter-sweet lie,
An old man’s fantasy
I still wish for
As I uncork the bottle
With the genie in it,
Too good to be true
Though I would
Sell my soul
For hear it again
To hang on every word
As if truth,
Still too scared
Out of my wits
As I was then
To utter anything
But disbelief,
Too good to be true
A memory bubble
I’ll spend a life time
Living in,
Remembering it all
Then forgetting
That time
When the bubble
Burst.
Too good to be true
