curled up against her
side l
ike a favorite pet,
the man who won her affection
by treating her
harshly
, a regular father figure she thinks
will fill the vacancy left by the father
who fled the family
(when she was) a kid,
a whiplash that hurt
at first,
and then grew pleasant,
to love her is to
scold her,
and the more she aches to cling to him,
purring as he presses
against her,
stirring when he whispers
comforting words in
her ear,
how he will always
protect her,
words she’s heard
before,
only this time
actually believes.
