The race that can’t be won Oct. 17, 2012

How many times

Can you ride around

The same track

Til you realize

It doesn’t go

Anywhere,

The harness chaffing

Until you bleed

Inside and out,

Even when you think

The race is won

It never is.

Even when you think

The race is over

It goes on and on

Even if you let

Loose the reins,

And you get put out

To pasture,

Thinking you are free

When it’s an illusion,

The hum of something

Powerful sounding

Inside you,

Horse power shifted

Into neutral,

And you find

You’re going nowhere,

While you think

You can go anywhere at all,

Do anything,

Act any way,

Presuming all this is good

Until someone --

Maybe even yourself –

Puts the harness back on you,

On your back

And you’re back

On that track,

Going somewhere

That is really nowhere,

And you still think

You can win,

When you can’t,

As you wait

This race

To run its course,

Wait for the moment

When you can

Really take the harness off,

Giving yourself time

To breathe
