A drink at home alone? April 2012

"What are you doing?"

appears on my office email,

as if I should know who it is

who is sending me the message

and why, though for all the months

we have worked together,

she's still a stranger to me,

this is the first time she sent me

a message here,

and I respond with "Hello,"

and that I'm just finishing up my work,

when she complains, her having to wait to leave,

"Bites" and wants to know if I need a drink

as much as she does

and suggests we go get one

together once we get free.

I can't, I tell her, I still have work to do,

a meeting to cover,

I can almost see her questioning

eyebrows rise with her next message,

 her schedule different from mine,

my day won't end when hers does,

telling me how bored she is

and suggests I come get

a drink with her anyway,

and when I say I can't she says,

she'll get one at home, alone,

and asks if it's bad

for someone to drink alone at home.

I feel guilty.
