toll. 2014

I come not for those ladies

who charge a toll for me to woo

those wanton ladies who act so chaste

yet will trade for gold to get below their waist

I do not deny their right for fair

I would give my all to touch their hair

that tender woman who would have me near

who would tell me no until we make it clear

this for that is where it's at

while I leap ahead blind as a bat

you make no bones about that

what we do make no pretense

when it comes to woo

she who I dream of at night

even though I have no right

touch it 2014

if you touch it too hard it goes away

this is the nature of it

 how to handle it carefully

like nitro

gentle yet rough enough

how to hold it in your hands

and shape it into what you need it to be

 a risky combination

we dare to address

to take it inside to roll it over

 and touch it

 all to consume it

 taste it swallow it whole

 yet not set it off

to possess it without destroying it

what is or what it means

tender enough to feel its love

yet love enough to make it respond

I had it and embrace it

even if pursuing it

I am terrified I might lose it

after all

Anticipation (2015)

I always dream of holding you

Pressing our body against mine

Feeling your warmth

Your softness,

Tasting your taste

When we kiss,

Always on the brink

Of a plunge I am

Reluctant to take

The build up to that

Moment as good

As the climaz,

Like an old movie

Where the hero

Wins the girl

Yet before he has

His way with her,

The holding, the touching

The tasting, tender

Mercies we feel

When we ache yet

Have not engaged,

Fingers feeling the

Soft places,

The rest of me aches

To reach,

Finding intense

Satisfaction in being

So close, yet

Not fully emersed,

The thrill of the dive

Before hitting

The water.

Hot wax on my fingers (2015)

I light candles

On my dinner table

And watch the wax

Drip down its

Long tapered sides

And I think of you,

What if these were

Your fingers

Instead of mind,

Feeling the sting

Of the hot wax

Where I hold too long

Or stroke too hard,

As if what I do

Causes the candles

To burn and melt,

Each stroke

Drawing out of it

This precious fluid

The sting of which

On my fingers

Also brings me

Pleasure,

Thinking it is you,

Who causes it

When if is my thinking

Of you that does,

Imagining again

The touch of you

On me that stirs up

This hot wax scalding

As it always has

And always will.

Is it real or is it butter

  February 25, 2013

The series of poems she posted over the last few days made me think of an advertisement for margarine that used to ask people if they could tell the difference between it and butter.

In these poems, she is expressing things that I have seen before when she sent similar poems a year ago, often with similar images, expressing the intensity of her desire and her loneliness, a bit more unmasked than these poems were, but very close in content.

One of these poems appears to be something she wrote a long time ago, but that only raises the question as to whether her repeated phases, from poems in the distant past, or last year or this month, are an honest reflection of love or manipulation.

What she said she saw in my eyes last year; she says she sees again in this man’s eyes and an overwhelming sense of breathless panic.

“How do you pursue a thing you know might destroy the life who you care so much for,” she wrote in one of her recent poems.

“Forgot the inevitable call back to his life, back to his home, back to his wife,” she wrote in one of her poems to me,” and then in another, “After you told me you couldn’t look your wife in the eyes, and I thought it was done.”

She once told me she never pursued a married man, but many married men pursued her, and yet in this recent series of poems, she is clearly the aggressor, reading things in this married man’s gestures and eyes that justify her pursuit, yet not so different from what she thought she saw a year ago.

“Then I walked up to your desk and saw your eyes, and then I felt my soul soar from logic and then felt my control go,” she wrote.

This is echoed in one of her most recent poems when she wrote, “I wish I had the power to comply with what is right and true…with just one glimpse of you my will withered.”

Or as expressed in one of the poems from a year ago, “I fell hard, nearly died. You gave me life and took it from me in a single statement and a single glance.”

In the first of her most recent batch of poems, she wondered if she could keep her lust contained, to allow her lust for him to go unrequited.

In one of her poems last year, she seemed to express similar confusion and raised a similar question as to whether or not to break the “high road pledge,” but also noted that “going home to an empty bed when you want someone in it is hard.”

In her most recent poem, she puts bits and pieces together, clues to a puzzle she described as “almost criminal,” and yet she concluded such an affair “would redeem the empty room she sits in.”

Back then as now, she contemplates her involvement with a married man, and yet concludes he really wants what she wants.

Is she selling herself on something or assuming things in both cases that may not be true?

Or, knowing that in both cases, the men she is referring to are reading her poems, and are willing to buy what she has to sell.

In other words, is any of this real? Is she really in love now, was she back then?

Or are these poems, then and now, a means of manipulating the man in question?

I want to think that what she expresses in these last three poems is real, and she really is as head over heals as she claims, partly because if it is real now, it might also have been real a year ago.

Black Supremacists

If you stay quiet, they might ignore you,

Even if you’re white; this new holy order

Parading flawed martyrs like Floyd

Yet condemn you if you fly the American flag

Madness filling the streets of Portland

Or Seattle or St. Louis

With smoke and curses

In the pretense of social justice

They really mean as revenge

Crushing us in their greedy fingers

As they pound the walls of law

They intend to topple

As we stare down at the terror

from the windows of the upper floors

stunned by the horror of humankind,

black faces and white faces

smothered in black masks

a new kind of KKK looking for

white people they can lynch,

caught in the frenzy

of their own misguided philosophies

as racist as the racists they hunt

black supremacists rather than white

looking for answers nobody can give

Black face

We need to bring back black face

And not just for the laughs,

Nobody’s laughing when the mob

Comes out to our house and yells

For us to get out,

“We’re going to fuck your daughter, too,”

They say, leaving us only when I drag out

The semi-automatic from my attic

And I tell them, “I’ll shoot the first person who tries,”

But we know it can’t last

We stand out too much in the crowd,

Our white faces making us an easy target

For them and the local authorities

Who brand us as racist for our guns

Yet say nothing when the mob bears arms, too,

We need to blend in like the liberal whites do,

Become invisible, to look like them,

At least from a distance

So, they might pass by our door

Black face instead of lambs blood

To let these angels of death

From pick out some other family,

We need a mask of black

We can hide behind long enough

For them to crucify someone else.
