Even if RR hadn’t come into the picture, she would have quit eventually – if not quite under the cloud she is under now.
Most of it is about money, and the starving wages she’s been getting paid. She would not be able to pay her rent if she’d not gotten help from her father (which she resents).
“I hate the idea of being dependent on him,” she said.
The truth of the matter hit her between the eyes last spring when she covered a job fair and found out that most of the people getting hired were making more than she was.
Asking the owner for a raise often puts you on the shit list, as several workers at the auxiliary office discovered.
Worse still when she got ready to meet with him, a disaster occurred in one of her towns. Her police sources gave him information that turned out to be wrong, and we faced a potential lawsuit for libel.
“How can I ask him for a raise with this hanging over my head?” she asked.
Although rumor says they already have a replacement lined up, she will be difficult to replace since she is bilingual on a beat where most of the population speaks Spanish.
There is some confusion as to whether or not she actually got the raise when she finally met with the owner. I’m told the owner agreed to give her “special assignments” justifying additional pay.
Our former temporary boss believes the owner flatly refused to give her anything.
Even if the owner gave her something, it couldn’t have been enough, and eventually she would need to seek other more lucrative employments.
Yet at one point, she took on airs in the staff meeting and around the office, acting as if she had been given some kind of promotion, and earning praise from our former temporary boss at staff meetings (when he still served as our boss). I kept getting the impression she wanted to move up in the company, only there is no place to move up to without forcing somebody else out.
Who would that be? Not the current boss, who seems to have something over the owner that keeps him from firing her, regardless of how much or often she fucks up – one more reason to move on. If she wants to play boss, she’s going to have to find some other play pen to do it in.
