The green grows up
Out of the cracks of the city
Where the children play
A spouting of hope
To catch the eye
And keep whole
The dreams of someplace else,
Each slap of the basketball
On stiff pavement
A down payment
On some better way of life
Not a suburban nightmare
But a dreamscape
Where each step is filled
With reach green and flowers
That promises of a full life
Unmolested by the muggers
Who prowl the allies and bars
In hopes to steal these dreams
Before they can ever
Take root
